The one located in Fergus Falls is currently the setting of two independent horror films ("The Control Group" and "Geist" but they're still in production). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb4SYyGF3T8 It's broken down and only about 5% is actually safe to be inside. It was state of the art when it was set up. They had a man who could perform two lobotomies at once. Parts of it are now a historic monument so they can't tear it down even though they want to so they can build something that will generate money. There are 26 miles of tunnels underneath it that reach out to neighboring farms so it was basically self-sustaining.
I hope this helps anybody writing about insane asylums. Also it looks like a castle which makes it even cooler.

Go to web sites of abandoned mental hospitals. The ones where urban explorers have been. There are photos, names information etc. on these sites.

When and where is your story set? Asylums have changed over time. They were a lot like jails back in the day and today they are more like hospitals.
I googled it. Here's a link that might help you: http://www.asylum.com/2010/02/02/famous-notorious-abandoned-haunted-insane-asylums/
Here's what wikipedia has to say: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_psychiatric_institutions

I'm writing something and the main character goes to jail. The problem is, I knew nothing about jail (I'm young, you see.)
All I did was Google waht jail life would be like. I got interviews, stories, and a yahoo answers that pretty much summed it all up realistically. So, I suggest Googling (lol, yes.) what an asylum is like, and base your asylum after that. C:

I am writing this book and I am having trouble describing and naming the insane asylum that my characters are at. I can describe their feelings and reactions just not the place. Can anyone help me? I would really apreciate it.
