My Favorites: Reading and Writing

  • This is too hard!  Partly because I have a terrible memory, even for things I love.  But here's a random beginning:
All books by Ann Patchett (but especially Bel Canto)
    Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies
    Elizabeth Gilbert's Stern Men
    John Updike's Gertrude and Claudius
    Jeffrey Eugenides's Middlesex
    Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie
Hamlet -- does this count as a book or a play?  I've studied it, produced it, and seen at least fifteen productions in my lifetime.
  • The Sky Isn't Visible from Here, by Felicia Sullivan -- a memoir to be released next week, which I'm reviewing for Newsday.
For non-work, just finished re-reading Madame Bovary and before that, Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union (one of the best books I've ever read).
  • If you have a favorite book, doesn't that mean its author is your favorite author?  Maybe not, because while I love some of Updike's work, I definitely don't like it all.  This is too hard a question, too!  But, see above. Ann Patchett, Jhumpa Lahiri, Shakespeare and yes, back in the day, Judy Blume.  I loved her books so much as a child that they made me want to become a writer of accessible fiction, too.
