Obviously, I love to write. However, I have a full time job. This keeps me pretty busy. I'm not one of the lucky ones who has the ability to sit in front of a computer for hours at a time. Maybe that isn't exactly fair, since I DO spend a LOT of time reading. It's pretty much my only hobby.
In fact, when money is available, it is not unusual for me to read 3 - 4 book a week. When money isn't available, I tend to go back and read some of my favorites... again.
To me, writing and reading are magic. The only good kind left in this world. A good book or a good story you are writing can make everything around you, all your cares and troubles, retreat. It's like a strong shield. How awesome is that? Something like that rates right up there with true love and sex in my opinion.
Are you starting to get the picture that I love writing and reading yet?
I've been reading for over 25 years now, solidly. It all started with a book called Planets for Sale when I was in the 6th grade. I'm sorry to say I can't remember the author's name, but I still have that book. Next, the clincher, the thing that fully pulled me into the special, magical realm of reading was Anne McCaffrey's The White Dragon. I quickly read that entire series and kept up with it.
I didn't start actively reading 3-4 books a week until I was in my 20's. Now I'm 43, (almost 44) so as you can imagine, not only do I have an impressive collection of books, but I have read a LOT of books. I have books all over the house, and my wife, who also likes to read, dispairs over the collection as we both trip over stacks of books.
I have varied interests when it comes to what I like to read. I read fiction, military fiction, crime fiction, mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy, and a few other genres. I try not to limit myself, but I tend to read what I like to read, and since it's my life, that is my right.
One of the things that I pride myself on is that since I have read so much, I feel I am a pretty good judge of what is good, and what isn't. Although personal choice comes into play, I can still read something that doesn't make that special spark in me, but still determine if it is a good story, well written, and interesting.
Because I have read so much, I am in a place now that it takes something really special to catch my eye and interest in such a way that I fall in love with the characters and story.
I'm open, I'm honest, and don't mind sharing my thoughts when asked.
For now, I think that is enough about me. :)
