The Symphony of War is the story of Army Air Force pilot Gabriel Thompson and his courageous efforts to save the lives of the men under his command. This story however, starts at the end before going to the beginning and showing you the impact that Thompson will have on his family and his men.

0903 Hours Local Time

 

Thunder rolled softly in the distance as rain started to drizzle from the gray sky above.  Around Sergeant Benjamin Rice women and children were quietly crying as they filed in around the flag draped coffin.  Men, both in dress uniform and in suits, stood solemnly silent, refusing to make eye contact with each other.  Next to him the soldiers of the 4th battalion (Special) 75th Ranger Regiment stood rigid and quiet.  Many of the Rangers who stood next to him owed their life to the man in that coffin: Captain Kale “Rev” Thompson.

Across the coffin Sergeant Rice could see Jamie Thompson behind a black veil covering her tears.  Gripping the sides of her black dress were Gabriel and Marshall Thompson, neither of which were old enough to fully comprehend what was happening.  With a silent sob, Jamie Thompson ran her hand over her pregnant belly, seemingly trying to comfort the child that Captain Thompson would never get to see.

Something gently batted the leg of his uniform and Sergeant Rice looked down to see that it was his own hand shaking.  He clenched his fist and struggled to quell the emotions that ran rampant through his body.

Looking around he couldn’t find the men who were closest to the Captain.  Rice found it impossible to believe that the handpicked squadron...
