The ISA- Inter-Systems Alliance- occupies the border planets of the Spin after a massive human diaspora from the shattered hulk of Old Earth. When the UEC- the last remnants of Earth's government and the surrounding systems, attacks the ISA in early 2348, the ISA Marine Corps becomes the last stopping block as the massive UEC Interdiction Fleet pushes into ISA controlled space.
While the ISA has allies in the form of the Varsi- an enigmatic alien race discovered in 2277- they are badly outnumbered, surrounded, and outgunned by the closing jaws of the UEC fleets and armies. In the closing months of the war after the disastrous Battle Of Armistice, the ISA's ruling body comes to terms with the UEC's forces, and the paired sides make some semblance of a ceasefire. While the UEC fleet limps home to lick it's wounds, the ISA's top military specialists- the Special Tasks Groups- are suddenly put out of a job as their division is swept under the rug before the story is leaked of their existence. While many of the "Stigs" simply escape to their fortress on the planet of Triumph, the remainder wander space as privateers, traders, and mercenaries, simply awaiting the next call to arms.
Once, there was a 796th Special Tasks Group, for whom the war never really ended.
