I really like it; I felt as if I was pulled into another world. There's a little choppiness in the beginning paragraphs, especially when you're describing the setting. It reads like, "Oh, here's a good place to put the setting details!" It seems a little forced, and messes with the natural flow of the story. But I really like how, in the small amount of space, you managed to develop Maya's character well.

I've revised the pitch to point more to the rising tension in the novel and expose the heart of the conflict it dramatises. I was in two minds about the blatant revelation but feel on balance this is more likely to attract curiosity. As the story unfolds from Maya's POV, I'm hoping that the reader can detect the clues which point to the truth she is so reluctant to accept. At the same time, I acknowledge it might be viewed as a spoiler. Opinions would be welcomed! Thanks.
