Isolated in the forest during the worst winter in memory, the village of Lonepine is running out of food and running out of hope. In a desperate effort to feed their people, the Eldercouncil of Lonepine selects the young logger Rolynd to set out through the forest in hopes of convincing their distant lord to send assistance. Knowing the journey to be perilous but wishing to prove himself a hero, Rolynd sets out, knowing nothing of what awaits him beyond the pines.
Serving as an introduction to the continent of Bistyria, the prologue begins in the small town of Lonepine, set in the foothills of the northern mountains. Isolated by the actions of the Eldercouncil, the governing body of the village, and by the great pine forest that surrounds them, the town begins to suffer starvation as the worst winter in living memory bears down upon them. Starvation begets rumors and fear, which turns to anger as the cold worsens.
