It's the mid twenty-second century. Mankind has successfully colonized Mars, as well as most of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Interplanetary travel and commerce is commonplace, and it is all done under the watchful eye for the Terran Unification.
Formed out of necessity from what was once the United Nations, the Unification was the first unified world government, granted emergency powers by it's citizens to regulate Earth's dwindling natural resources. With new technologies and the seemingly limitless resources of the Solar System now withing humanity's grasp, the Unification has long outlived it's usefulness. But as with all draconian, tyrannical governments, it isn't simply going to go away. The Unification has gone rampant with corruption, greed and oppression. Out of an effort to save itself, humanity has created a monster.
Weary of the Unification's statist opression, Earth's more educated people have been fleeing the planet for the offworld colonies by the millions. The Unification's highest echelons have taken notice, and now seek to dissolve the local Colonial governments and sieze total control of the colonies, touting their motto: "To ensure the continued survival and well being of all mankind."
Unwilling to suffer under the tyranny of the Unification again, but with nowhere left to run, The Colonists of Mars and the Jovian and Saturnian moons have secretly joined together to form the Coalition if Independent Colonies, and are scrambling to manufacture weapons and warships in time to defend their way of life from the imminent advance of the Unification. Hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned, they prepare to make their stand in the name of freedom. Less
