A country boy joins the Macedonian Army under the new king, Alexander, only to be swept up into the epochal campaign against Persia. The story traces the arc of the life of Leonnatos of Lycestis, from the backwoods hill country of western Macedonia to the battlefields of Asia Minor, the riches of Egypt and Babylon and over the Hindu Kush into the unknown realms of the Punjab.
