Impact

These three poems explore the impact that war and violence has on the people left behind: what emotions do the victors feel after the battle? How do we deal with grief? And do we always recognise the soldiers who return?

'Pools of Red' was inspired by the poem 'Success is counted sweetest' by Emily Dickinson and focuses on how a soldier might feel after winning a battle.

I wrote 'Jig-saw' after seeing puzzle pieces scattered on a pavement outside my school. The pieces seemed almost sad and lonely in the open space on the ground and so the poem was formed.

I can't remember what inspired me to write 'Stranger' and what happened to the soldier to make his personality change so much is up to you to decide. ... more »
