S.O.L.

S.O.L. is a satire of the public education system.

After escaping the horrific dangers of their previous school (Raleigh's Prep.), three miscreants-- Topher Bill, Zorn Giftwad, and Kenneth "Gertrude" Hughes-- steal a car and head south. After a divergent visit to New York City, the three find themselves stranded in rural Virginia. They decide to finish their senior year of high school before heading their separate ways.

There's some good comic writing here, especially with the teachers, but the bits with Topher et. al. are too slapstick and surreal to hold my interest. While you're obviously having fun with language, the acrobatic misunderstandings and nested digressions and flashbacks strained my patience as a reader. I was also frustrated when I'd gotten several chapters in and you still hadn't left any strong hints about the connection between the two story lines. While your writing has a lot of energy and flair, I think you have to rein it in a little in order to keep it from becoming too self-indulgent.

Being a former ps teacher, I think I'm going to enjoy this. Great start, I'm drawn in by the characters, dialogue.... Mr. Meddle? Real name? Going to check out more soon.
