There are two basic versions, English and Italian. Both are 14 lines long and both are traditionally written in iambic pentameter-five feet to a line. Mainly they differ in rhyme scheme.

Italian Sonnet: usually arranged as two quatrains and two triplets: (abba, abba,  cde, cde) it has no concluding couplet.
