THE NIGHT WE DANCED UP A STORM
THE NIGHT WE DANCED UP A STORM is a prequel to the 1992 children's book IF HURRICANES WERE CANDY CANES (Amazon) also written by Jayne Bonilla. In her first book, Jayne Bonilla conveys a message of hope and rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew which devastated her South Florida community and brought turmoil to many families. Jayne and her family were involved in the recovery efforts and she was inspired to write her book to allow children to step back and look at their own experience,

Ingenious to write a story that prepares children for natural disasters but doesn't scare them. Instead it prepares them and makes them a part of the process which is really important. Bravo!
I believe that every school library should have a copy of this book! Whether (weather) you live in the path of a hurricane, tornado, near a river that could flood or any other natural disaster; this book and the first book "if Hurricanes Were Candycanes" are the perfect topics to share with your children, of all ages.
great book about dancing hmmmm I wonder how the author picked this subject????
The weather channel should adopt this book as part of Hurricane Season Preparation and as part of their emotional tool kit! A must read and must have for every family.
Great little book to have on hand for any family with young children who live through hurricane seasons!
How meaningful is it for children who have been exposed to any natural disaster to have the chance to read about it later at a level they can grasp!
Hey, it's all good! I wish yoiu the best...Good luck! You got my vote..I hope you will return the vote...
You are a very good writer I love your style. I voted for you please vote for my book "King Loverr: Diary of a Philosophical Loner.
This is something I think would be fabulous to read to children. Especially with some illustrations...
I love the rollicking rhytmn and the family having a "blast."
JUst FYI, I have pub. some short pieces for children and am a ret. children's librarian.
To my eyes, I think the middle should have a bit more detail...perhaps after "we danced up a storm". If you did this, then the book wod. be a bit longer, perhaps good for a picture book. Good luck!

I thought that this was a great story on How not to be scared and be prepared. It's a great story and turns something that can be scary to think about into something to be ready for in a fun up beat way. Good Job Aunt Jayne
Jayne,
It is a very beautiful story where adults, teenagers and children might have a lot of fun.
I love all the Music involved in the story and, of course the happy ending.
Thanks,
Pegasee

This works well-- although at this point the two different part of the story (storm watch and dancing) could be better integrated.
This is a great idea, and well-executed. To feel complete, it would need illustrations. Is the original book illustrated? Also, is the hurricane preparedness checklist something that the author will provide?
There are a few problems with punctuation -- mis-placed apostrophes.
I really like the fun, family take on this topic.

This is very good, but I agree that I would recommend putting your things into a compilation and looking to publish that.
brought both memories of dancing the many storms I have experienced. well done
Nice job! It would actually be neat if you put all of your stories into one big children's book. Just an idea, but I think that would really be cool! Bravo

Finally, a book for children about preparing for a hurricane that is not frightening but empowering, not scary but sensible. The mood in this story is uplifting and friendly and will make children feel a part of the planning process instead of sitting by and watching and waiting for an unpredictable event. Children love to help and want to be treated as responsible individuals.
It's AMAZING the way the author used all the types of music and dances into her story. You can tell that she knows a thing or two about what she writes. Wow! This one is really cool. VERY creative!!!!!! :)
great message and story
and memorable line,
And when you're prepared there's no need to be scared.

Our happy and festive mood had diminished. -- consider, "quickly diminished."
Our family has so much to celebrate.-- consider, "had so much" to match the tense in the surrounding lines

I vote for THE NIGHT WE DANCED UP A STORM. The author has such a way with words!!!
The author delivers an important message to children in a very unique manner. Should be on Oprah's Book Club.
Needs to be published so kids have something to read to help them cope with disasters! Great story!
