The Character Creation Challenge
Some writers argue that stories live and die by the strength of their characters. Gut-wrenching plots and expertly crafted prose amount to zip if a reader can't engage with the characters.
With that sentiment in mind, this challenge will be all about character creation. Fill out the following information for a character you've either written about already, or made up on the spot. Try to be as specific and unique as possible.

GIVE FEEDBACK
Character Development:
David Spencer is a correctional officer for the Washington State Penitentiary in his hometown of Walla Walla. He has been employed with the WSP for nearly ten of his thirty plus years on this planet and, through the course of his career, has become callous and cold in order to survive the rigors of guarding the world against the worst humanity has to offer.
Though his expansive training in defense and combat clearly shine through as his most admirable traits which he has used more than once to protect survivors in his charge, his biting words and caustic wit often do their own damage on an already fragile group of scared souls, making nearly every action of opening his mouth an action which diminishes admiration.
Though he would never share his weaknesses with others, his greatest fears aren't the liberation of the many dregs of society he has sworn to keep in place but rather, that his own actions would put him in the same place as those below him. Sadly, his sickest desires bring him dangerously close to facing that fear as he often contemplates the elimination of the entire human race. A desire which he secretly acted upon recently during the zombie outbreak in which he gunned down an innocent woman more for his pleasure than to eliminate her living dead brother she was trying to protect.
Though his nihilistic philosophy is, "We're all meat, its only a matter of who eats who"; his steely resolve is a facade and the thing that would drive this man to tears is the threat of being truly alone, without those he loves or shuns. Sadly, all he needs to drive him to murder is the potential of dodging legal responsibility. This potential is one that is quickly realized when the zombie outbreak destroys his society.

Least admirable action: Lying. Ken looks at the world differently than most of us. He doesn't understand the American desire to always tell the truth. He isn't a good man, and does not have a good heart.
Greatest fear: Being figured out. Having someone he knows actually know all about him.
Greatest desire: Being figured out. Having someone he knows actually know all about him.
Darkest secret: Secret? Ken doesn't keep anything to himself. If you know Ken, you know everything about ken. There are no secrets in his world.
One sentence philosophy on life: Live life freely. Do not squander time, use your wit, use your intellect, use your mind to get the most out of your life.
Things that would drive character to tears: His girlfriend. She knows too much.
Things that would drive character to murder: His girlfriend. She knows too much.
Name: Elsu the Wild
Age:23
Birth place: The back of a trade wagon skirting the edge of the Fae's forest. Bandits attacked his trader parents and he is orphaned into the care of the mysterious, sometimes man-eating beings inhabiting the forest
Job: Sellsword, soldier, and semi-talented mage. When he leaves the forest of his childhood, he travels with a small group of scholars and a mercenary for a while, the latter of which sort of adopts him and teaches him his trade. As war escalates between the Monarchy of Favlend and the Commonwealth of Gald, he is drafted into the army and eventually becomes the captain of a small band separated from the main army in the invasion of Kurisdale. Throughout his time in civilized lands he takes odd jobs as a mage, though his talent isn't technically magic in the same sense as what is widely practiced.
Most admirable action: During an attack on the only non-sea route between Favlend and Gald, a small pass between the deadly forest of the Fae and the Ocean, Elsu and his band collapse the land pass into the ocean through a combination of "magic" and civil engineering, holding back Gald's first legion and turning the war around.
Least admirable action: Second least admirable action deserves an honerable mention; On the night of a party in his honor commemorating his deeds in war, Elsu sneaks into the King's chambers and slays the ruler in his sleep. The king had done nothing wrong, but had instead been an obstacle that was inadvertently causing unrest among the populace, and so Elsu kills him to prevent civil war. He is greatly ashamed of this kill, especially since the man's son was his good friend, but he firmly believes that it needed to be done and does not regret it.
Absolute least admirable action is when he lays an entire town to waste using his "magic" while in the throes of an unbelievable rage caused by the death his mentor, Boa.
Greatest fear: Elsu greatly fears a bloody civil war caused by friction between those who can use magic and those who don't. He fears Galdish rule of Favlend even more. More than that, Elsu fears the loss of what few friends he has in civilized lands, namely that of his love interest Kana. But above all, he fears that he will lose control again one day and get lost in the pattern of hatred and death, causing untold damage to the surrounding countryside and possibly killing his friends.
Greatest desire: Elsu's greatest desire for most of the story is to return to the forest of his childhood, even though the Fae more or less kicked him out, but as he grows his desire expands to learn all the patterns of the world, these patterns forming the basis for his "magic", an example being the pattern of the wind letting him step "into the wind" and vanish into the folds of air, traveling swiftly without being seen. He hopes that when he has learned enough patterns, he can quell the pattern of rage that occasionally surfaces in him once and for all.
Darkest secret: The burial location of Traznyr, the queen of demons, a legendary figure who once sucked the blood from Astek, the Father of Gods. Traznyr is imprisoned by Mahraghen, an ancient king of trees that was buried beneath the mountains in the catastrophic final battle between Astek and Traznyr. If a few select members of Astek's brood discovered this location, they would seek to release her and set hell loose on the planet.
One sentence philosophy on life: "Between gods and men, the only difference is the scale of their folly."
Things that would drive character to tears: The death of his closest friends, including Boa, Kana, and Tedlu, his father figure among the Fae. He also weeps as he is forced to kill the King of Favlend and the first time he witnesses the widespread destruction of war, and whenever he loses control to his inner demons and commits violent acts he didn't mean.
Things that would drive character to murder: Assuming murder as not counting warfare, if the perceived "greater good" requires it, and on one occasion, a blind rage that consumes the population of an entire town. At other times he performs vicious acts of torture bringing enemies so close to death they begin begging for it, and then leaving them to die.

Am I a Hero?
In his last weeks, as he lay dying, over and over he asked, “Am I a hero?”
I found it distressing because in spite of our reassurances his voice quavered as he picked at the scab of his doubtings.
Yes, he was a hero. When he enlisted in the Army Air Corps (WWII) he served for three long years away from home, not even a short visit after he had completed his training in Nebraska, but shipped overseas to make sure the planes were fit to fly.
He was required to fly with the crew in planes that he had repaired. His official title was “Flight Engineer,” but he preferred “Airplane Mechanic.” Their highly explosive cargo, barrels of High Octane gasoline, transported “over the hump” between China and India, made it a nervous ride.
His return home was not as the crow flies but rather as circuitous as a serpent ‘s tail. He was dropped off and picked up in one exotic location after another. He saw the world but missed the party. The party his family threw for the heroes returned from the wars: two of his brothers, two nephews, and a number of in-laws. But they were not called heroes back then. It was expected that the young enlistees and draftees would, and should, defend their country.
So now he lay petulant, his brain addled by Alzheimer’s, feeling un-hero-like and unimportant. He knew he was dying and I suspect that he wanted to take something with him, a major accomplishment worthy of reward.
After he died I thought to return to the novel I was writing. I had stopped writing before his final illness (a massive growth in his chest) because I could not handle his dying and the three upcoming deaths in my novel. I was ill as well, not always thinking coherently, certain that I, too, was dying.
Post mortem I embarked on an interval of feeling sorry for myself. About six months earlier our cat, Orpheus, had died and I’d cried uncontrollably for three months, and incredibly almost every day. But when my husband died I didn’t cry. Perhaps I felt that if I started crying I would never stop, or maybe the crying over Orpheus was my grieving for my husband in advance. Who understands the mechanism of grief, anyway? I don’t.

Name: Kat-Yen; renamed "Kat" by her 1st master
Age: 17-21 years old
Birth Place: A small hut with a dried-grass roof, last and lingering memory of home is looking up at the grass-roof ablaze as her fellow villagers are cut down in a raid by the "civilized ones"
Job: Slave; Kat has clawed her way up the slave ladder in her 1st master's home. Her wise and at times conniving mannerism have rendered her irreplaceable in her master's home until she is sold via her own devious plan to make her 1st master more money.
Most admirable action: Refusing to use her body to gain ground in an admirer's eye that could give her freedom, at the cost of her 2nd master, who secretly loves Kat's admirer.
The unwillingness to use her body to gain ground and favor in a wealthy friend of her 2nd master. Were she to indulge his love for her, her 2nd master would certainly be devastated, esp. since Kat's 2nd master loves her friend immensely.
Least admirable action: Creating a scheme for her 1st master to cover the expenses of stolen property and gold stolen by a lower slave. The scheme entails a slave and a golden statue to be presented and "raffled off", little will the winner know that it is the slave or "figure" they will be winning instead of the slave. By a twist of fate, Kat is the slave who is raffled off.
Greatest fear: Returning the love of a friend of her 2nd master. If she does she will never be able to freely leave the place she has sworn to loathe for all eternity. Kat fears that her selfish persona that has kept her alive during her enslavement will be lost in the overwhelming and unselfish love that is burning out of control within. Were she to give in she will lose all hope of returning to her homeland.
Greatest desire: Kat yearns to be free and return to her homeland, but she wants to leave with power and authority instead of a worthless runaway who is forgotten. She yearns to break a thousand hearts when she leaves the land of her captors in exchange for the thousand heartbreaks she endured during her 7 years of hell as well as the loss of her village sweetheart.
Darkest secret: Kat was a member of a certain tribe in her homeland that forbids its members to marry or fornicate with foreigners. Anyone who does so can never return to the heaven-like land of Kat's tribe. Kat finds that remaining a virgin until she returns is extremely difficult in a land where slaves earn small privileges with one-night stands with their masters and/or superiors and at times, even fellow slaves.
Were her secret to be found out, there would be plenty of foreign men who would love to sleep with Kat out of spite.
One sentence philosophy on life: If the enemy made you bleed, keep it secret until you can take ten fold the blood they took from you.
Things that would drive character to tears: The heartache of being torn between a rare, kind and loving foreigner and the heavenly realm of her homeland. As well as the possibility of never being able to return home/ having nothing to return to.
Things that would drive character to murder: Someone attempting to rape her; Kat's virginity (or lack of) is the only thing that can truly keep her from returning to her homeland. Kat's sense of innocence and empathy have long been dead. Kat's original value was based on the fact that she nearly beat a fellow countrywoman to death because it had been the woman's infant's crying that had caused their capture as well as the death of her sweetheart. The appeal of a young beautiful woman who could commit mutiny against her own people was considered a trait of devout loyalty to a future master.

No the average person doesn't go around murdering, but the idea of something that would drive them to murder is different than just plain old murder.
Murderer does it cause they think its fun
Driven to Murder, means that something has happened that would make that character kill another person (for example, maybe a lover was tortured and killed, or a family member was raped/attacked or something along those lines)

Am I missing something?
Who in the everyday world murders people? Why would my character be considered stronger than usual for not being a killer? Does it take any kind of resistance to spare a life? These comments to the idea that my character is not a killer are scaring me. Please tell me that average people don't kill other people. I've never murdered someone, have you?
