The Dragon Slaying Challenge
In the last WEbook Writing Challenge, we asked writers to create a monster. Now, we’re going to have you slay one—a dragon, to be specific. After this challenge, we’ll move away from mythical beasts (probably).
If you’re currently thinking, “There aren’t that many ways to slay a dragon, this is going to be a boring challenge where all the entries are the same,” you are addressing this challenge in a closed-minded fashion. We hypothesize that there are well over a thousand original ways for a ... more »

Guess what! I just found out about a literary agent who is seeking phone pitches! He says he likes to talk to his potential clients and see if they click with him. Sorry, international folks, but he only works with people in the US. Just call (212) 439-6500 and ask for Harry Bare.
Hey y'all,

YALTABAOTH, “CELESTIAL ADVERSARY”
Yaltabaoth, the Adversarial Fire Djinn, was the wisest among the angels, the deific force with the dual mask of angel and beast. ~ http://www.alynepustanio.com/YALTABAOTH.php
(great site for sorcerers; LOL )

BTW (I had to look this up) the meaning of "And the Sophia of the Epinoia," Sophia (wisdom); Epinoia (source of all).

This quote is from another work, not the Bible. It comes from a codex found in the Egyptian Desert a couple of centuries ago. It is from a Gnostic codex entitled "The Apocrphon of John" A very interesting read; but, rejected by the Church as heretical. I just thought it was interesting considering this topic. <grin>
Be well, cindi_green and I hope not to offend you with quotes from ancient people in far away lands.

From the desire of a divine female light to create without the influence of the supreme male part of their god-head, came the first dragon from the heavens.
"And the Sophia of the Epinoia, being an aeon, conceived a thought from herself and the conception of the invisible Spirit and foreknowledge. She wanted to bring forth a likeness out of herself without the consent of the Spirit, - he had not approved - and without her consort, and without his consideration. And though the person of her maleness had not approved, and she had not found her agreement, and she had thought without the consent of the Spirit and the knowledge of her agreement, (yet) she brought forth. And because of the invincible power which is in her, her thought did not remain idle, and something came out of her which was imperfect and different from her appearance, because she had created it without her consort. And it was dissimilar to the likeness of its mother, for it has another form.
"And when she saw (the consequences of) her desire, it changed into a form of a lion-faced serpent. And its eyes were like lightning fires which flash. She cast it away from her, outside that place, that no one of the immortal ones might see it, for she had created it in ignorance. And she surrounded it with a luminous cloud, and she placed a throne in the middle of the cloud that no one might see it except the holy Spirit who is called the mother of the living. And she called his name Yaltabaoth."

My shot at some humor - Wrong 'Spell'ing . Please read and provide your feedback. This is my first submission and I need to know if should stop right now or continue .
Very cool challenge. Glad to throw a submission into the mix. And read a few.
Love this! As I just love challenges. Took me 2 days to cut my story of 2700 words back to 500 words. Quite a challenge to remain true to my characters and plotline. But how I enjoyed myself! Hope that some of you like my story as well :-)
I posted it around the same time as this comment.(spend the time in between reading the stories of other contestants)

Dah this is my second entry into a contest I have no idea how to make it 500 words... I will post it soon be on the lookout
now I'm mad -.-
why is it always dragon's who have to be slayed? why can't, for once, there be something where the dragon's the hero and the humans are the bad guys?
you know what, I'm going to enter this. and the dragon will be victim to the evil humans, and be slayed.

This is only my second every submission to these contests... it's quite fun! If anyone's interested, "Bless You, Miss!" will give you an entirely different way to kill a dragon and leave the slayer virtually anonymous. :]
Thanks Tuatha. My bad. I added my revised edition. Any feed back apprechiated.
Well everyone, I'm willing to f2f meaning whoever gives me feedback, I will return the favour.

The Beast
All of earth and heaven trembles at its sight as it hovers in the canvass of the smoldering rose red, blacken skies above. The giant beast’s mighty wings stretch across the horizons beating against the air like the pounding of a thousand drums. Its keen gaze burns like sulfur and it’s long, slender blackened scaly torso curls and twists as it maneuvers through the murky clouds above.
Below the towns people desperately scurry back and forth like frightened mice being pursued in an open field. In the mist of the chaotic scene a young child is bumped and knocked down forcefully onto the ground. The dragon circles then swoops landing a few feet from its helpless prey. The young child’s screams are over powered by the beast’s mighty and triumphant roar.
Suddenly, from the shadows of darkness, her shinny golden armor appears behind the trembling child. She stands ready and unmoved by the sight of the hideous beast. In her right hand she holds steady her enormous polished golden oval shield which extends the length of her tall and lanky frame. In her left hand she grasps firmly at her sword that sparkles and gleams in the fleeting rays of the dimming sunlight. The golden figure, with lightening speed and unyielding courage, moves to the forefront interceding on behalf of the helpless prey against the stalking beast. The golden Knight now postures herself, preparing for this life and death encounter against the tyrant beast.
With beastly instincts, the dragon now postures itself comprehending the challenge before it and its meal. Its slopping arrow shaped head spirals shooting ten feet high into the air then canvassing the darkening sky with its bat like wings. Then with a voice that shakes all of creation, the beast bellows a roar that can be heard half way around the world as it prepares to attack.
The golden Knight does not even flinch in the presence of the creature’s malevolent power as her eyes peer keenly from the shelter of her golden armored helmet, crouching as low to the ground as possible as if anticipating of the beast’s next move. The beast suddenly heaves from the pit of its belly with one large and mighty exhale, spewing forth its flaming and venomous breath in the direction of the determined golden Knight.
Earth and stone smolders beneath the golden armor feet of the valiant Knight as the stench of the beast’s fiery breath washes away from her large oval golden shield. Every hopeful eye now set its gaze upon the golden Knight as she swiftly dashes forward thrusting her arm forward impaling the point of her blade into the center of the beast’s burning chest, piercing its dark beating heart with one single strike. The beast bellows a loud heinous cry before its wings wither and droop, its scaly body coils and curls prostrate to the earth and as its blackened eyes become still and finally lifeless at the feet of the victorious Knight.

I'm so excited I found this!
I just discovered these writing contests and submitted my first entry yesterday. It's such a great tool to get feedback from fellow writers, and to check out the competition; there's a lot of talent showcased here!
If you have a few moments, check out my entry, "The Real Monster" and let me know what you think. Honest opinions only, please. :)

I have to share here, "I Cried Once" was selected by Outskirts Press to be included in their new Anthology called _Pandemonium _ http://outskirtspress.com/webpage.php?ISBN=9781432770433
It was sort of a contest held on their Facebook page. I am honored once again. I submitted several pieces and this one was selected. Oddly enough, it was the second best piece I submitted in the WEbook anthalogy of 2009. WEbook did not select this piece (even though selecting "Private Jones' Reality"); so I submitted to the other contest.

I usually add twists to the challenges and I was wondering if this has to literally be a dragon and if it literally has to be slayed. Check out my submission when its posted to see what I mean. Please comment!
Attention young writers 13-16 years old! Here's a contest just for you.
