Zoe was adopted in July of 2008. She was just 5 months old when I adopted her. A volunteer called from a shelter and told me that a puggle was available. This is a breed comprised of half pug and half beagle. Two puggles were being abused by local teenagers and they were found in the bushes near the shelter. They were two helpless puppies with their owners nowhere in sight. I was on the waiting list for a puggle at this shelter. I was supposed to adopt one the previous month, but I had to go out of town. When I came back in town, the puggle had been adopted.
When I received the call from the shelter, I was was excited, nervous, and apprehensive. I lived in a one bedroom condo in the city. I didn’t have a yard, but there was a park and a field a block away. I had wanted a dog for years, but it never seemed like the right time. Now that I would be on summer vacation from my job at a local elementary school, the timing was perfect. I went to the shelter the day after receiving the call. Zoe and her sister had just had surgery-they were spayed that morning. She was a bit drowsy and I wasn’t even sure how to hold her properly. My friend and I took her outside and walked her a bit. I knew instantly that I had to adopt her. Luckily, her sister was adopted the same day. I exchanged numbers with Zoe’s sister’s owners and promised to have the two dogs get together again. I had to wait three days until Zoe received all of her shots and recovered from the surgery. I gave the shelter employee my references and deposit and promised to return in a few days.
I took my checklist to the local pet store and bought everything I needed for Zoe. I was thrilled when the time to pick her up finally arrived. The volunteer had me fill out a lot of paperwork and gave me a book on how to care for puppies.
I was finally ready to take Zoe home. As we left the shelter, I felt sad for the other dogs. Would they be adopted too? At least I knew it was a no-kill shelter so they would eventually find homes. Zoe was quiet on the way home. She must have been scared since we were in the car for an hour. I arrived home and showed her around. We went for a walk in the neighborhood. It was amazing how friendly people are when walking a puppy. Zoe was limping so I was worried that she was sick or had an injured leg. My first night, I was scared that she would not sleep well in a new home. She sat on my bed and warmed up to me very quickly.
After taking Zoe to the vet because of her limp, the technician took an x-ray. Her curly tail looked adorable on the x-ray. They did not find any problems and her limp disappeared a few days later. Before I had adopted Zoe, I had booked a trip to New Orleans for mid-August. This was only two weeks after I adopted her. It was very difficult to leave Zoe, but I had already paid for the trip. I called the pet hotel daily to check in on Zoe. She was fine. I was so relieved and happy to return from the trip. I take her to the local pet hotel when I am out of town.
Zoe loved to chew on everything. My couch and chair were fading as they were getting old. After Zoe bit holes in both items, it was time to replace them. Most of my shoes ended up half-eaten because I carelessly left them sitting out. The damage was endless. Once I returned home to find that Zoe has broken an antique vase that was a family heirloom. When I would pick up Zoe to scold her, she always licked my face as if she was offering a brief apology.
Adopting a pet has been one of the best decisions I ever made. It has definitely had its ups and downs. For example, once Zoe wiggled out of her leash and ran down a busy street. She only stopped when I screamed as she ran towards a moving car. Another time, she escaped from a new harness I had bought her. I had to chase her down a dark alley until she finally realized she was cornered and had to surrender. Zoe is always there to cheer me up. Although I had to force myself to take her on walks during the frigid Chicago winter, each walk made me feel good. I am grateful to have a pet. I look forward to returning home from work each day because she greeted me excitedly when I arrived.
I understand that people like to purchase pets through breeders and at pet stores, but there are thousands of dogs at shelters waiting for a new home. As the economy has continued to affect millions of Americans, many people have been forced to give up their pets. For this reason alone, I feel that adopting a pet is a wonderful way to help the local shelters.

"Greatest poet on Earth" is a bold claim, and although I see a lot of drive and a lot of emotionality from you, wenniepoo, I'm having a hard time justifying "Greatest."
Anyway, good luck and keep writing.

I'm an old fool to depend on others to make things work. I had to go back and change the settings so that you could submit. I wanted to keep it private and accept only about 20 writers but like everything else today nothing has gone my way. Go ahead my dear Wendy, you can submit to your hearts content.
BDC...O.K. I'LL WRITE IT HERE!!!
