An ancient, lonely vampire living near a local town in Massachusetts finds Christabel and her sister to be beautiful and kidnaps them to be his companions. In the process, he murders their father and ultimately causes their mother to commit suicide after becoming an outcast for claiming a vampire stile her children. Later, the burden of being undead forever, along with the disturbing mixed feelings she has for her master, become too much for Christabel's sister. By allowing the sun to burn her, she commits suicide.
After this incident, Christabel's master refuses to allow her to leave. This brings her to murder him year later in order to gain her freedom. Unfortunately, this is breaking one of the most important rules among vampires, and if forces her to change her name and to move frequently.
In the present, she meets a guy while picking off easy and unnoticeable victims in a club. She takes him back to her apartment, but cannot take him as her victim. She quickly realizes that she is attracted to him, and a relationship slowly develops between the two.
After witnessing her among the streets of the city, a local vampire coven discovers her presence and demands her death for the murder of her master. Realizing she is in danger, she finds that she trusts her new lover enough to risk telling him the truth. He accepts her for what she is and promises to help protect her.
