Etan Thomas Presents: Voices of the Future
This project is for people age 13 to 25 interested in writing about their future. What issues are important to you—the war in Iraq, HIV/AIDS, race? How have these and other problems affected you directly? And how would you solve them? NBA player, poet, and activist Etan Thomas leads this project as contributor and editor. Write your poem or tell your story here and be considered for publication. To learn more, click here: http://www.webook.com/landing/Etan-Thomas-Presents-Voices-of-Our-Future

A Father’s Gift
"I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father's protection." -- Sigmund Freud
My dad, like every other dad in the universe, was the best and strongest person in the world to me. Nothing could ever hurt him. I loved him more than anything and I was his little princess… his little angel. It had never occurred to me that this would become a mere memory in the future. When I was about ten, my parents got divorced and my dad disappeared. Literally. He left and not a soul knew where he went. To this day, there has been no trace of him. Dead or alive.
Everything changed. My dad was NOT the strongest. He was crushed. He had been torn apart and was beyond repair. He had never been impregnable at all. But not once did he let anyone see his vulnerable side.
He is the reason why I am, who I am today. I never let anyone see me unguarded and susceptible. No matter how miserable I feel, I am ever- smiling and jovial to the outside world. I channel my tears into a smile and my pain into laughter. It is all just a show but at the same time it is a valuable lesson my dad had once taught me. It hides my weaknesses and doesn’t give anyone an opportunity to take advantage of me in any way. I owe my independence, ability to fend for myself, and the stubbornness to face any situation head on to my dad.
I am conscious of every decision I take as I know that my dad is watching me, ready to chide me at the necessary moment. He would never leave his little girl unprotected. He taught me to do everything whole-heartedly and never have regrets, to enjoy all the trivial things life has to offer, to look back and learn from the past.
Though I have reached adulthood in the absence of my father, I have his distinctive traits and his ideals in every fibre of my being. I’m a caring, loving, tenacious, resilient, willful, convivial and individualistic person just like he had been.
My dad’s last and most precious gift to me was myself. I owe my whole identity to him.
“Dad, your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever.”

I was wondering what kinds of poetry you were putting into this book. I can possibly offer a few pieces, but am not going to just throw myself at someones project. If you would like, you can read any works in my projects and decide from there, whether or not you want my input.
I want to
I know I will
I want to finish highschool with grades good enough to go to Harvard.
I want to go to Harvard and study law so that when I grow up I can make a change as big as president Barak Obama did.
When I grow up I want to be not only the first woman president, but also the first Latina president of the U.S.A.
I want to help the environment and stop global warming.
I want to help stray animals that are being left on the street everyday because someone doesn't want them anymore.
I want to help stop the violence in homes.
I want to help families so they actually stay together for more than a year.
No it's not I want to it's I know I will.

hurray for me being 13. I already included 4 of my writings. I can't wait to see what the future brings us. I have a lot of years ahead of me and I can't wait to see what I can do!
Congratulations Ethan Thomas!
This project and the contributive writing is phenomenal! I only wish that I was 23 years younger so I could participate! But I will put on my sunglasses because the future is extremely BRIGHT!
Peace,
