Francis was excited. No. Way more than excited. He could barely sit still as the last minutes ticked away on the big clock in the corner of the classroom. Only 5 minutes to go til the bell set the class free and he could gather his things and go find his Mom who was coming to pick him up. Normally he takes the bus home, like the rest of his friends, but today, well, today was SPECIAL! His Mom told him this morning that today was the day they would go to the Animal Shelter and Francis would at long last get his VERY OWN PUPPY!
He had waited for this day for what seemed like an eternity. Finally he was going to have a real friend that he could always count on to love him and make him feel safe. Especially when his Mom and Dad would fight. It used to be only on holidays that Dad would drink so much. He would drink so much....bottles and beer cans literally carpeted the house. it would make his Mom so scared. Scared for herself for the beating she knew was inevitable when his Dad got this way, but also scared for Francis. More than anything she was scared that her might get involved somehow and wind up on the receiving end of a right hook intended for her
Francis thought that this puppy might be just the thing to stop their fights. If he couldn't get them to stop by being a good enough son, then maybe the puppy would be cute enough to distract them and they could love more and fight less.
