Her face stinging and tears sliding down her cheeks, she looked up into his eyes.
she kept on crying, ignoring the fact that he was holding her close, and tried to push him away.
She cried out and held her face with one hand. She sobbed quietly until he realized he had hurt her too much and enfolded her into a hug. "I'm sorry...I wasn't thinking...I'm sorry.."
You know what! I'm not 13 teen anymore, with out thinking he slaped her hard on the face.
Commander James Sun Eagle sat at his desk in the intelligence pool at Nellis Air Force base. He was on loan to the Air Force; sen to oversee the final preparations for the move to Utah. His younger Son John Robert was only three and both he and six year old Garrett were a handful. They got along well though and he thanked God for that daily. Everything was going well until he received the las batch of files. The lid read Top Secret/Top Secret clearance only. This why he was here. James opened the box and pulled out some of the files. James couldn't believe what he was reading. They were scientific assays of things that he never knew were going on here. It made hime nervous so he closed the door and locked it up tight so he wouldn't be interrupted. Experiments on alien aircraft, autopsies. It was all here, everything the so-called "UFOlogists" said was happening deep in the bowels of Area 51. Not only that, technology this world just wasn't ready for was being stoles from the aliens. He had to get this information to someone fast. He knew just the person too. James took his briefcase from the floor and placed it on his desk. He opened it as quickly as he could and placed eight of the files in it then locked it up and reset the combination locks. He just wanted to get home to his lab. This transfer was getting a little too hairy. It irked him. Why would they keep these things secret from the american people? What was being planned under their noses? He closed the box up and placed it on a shelf for further review tomorrow morning. Then it dawned on him. This is all the stuff that was not available through the Freedom of Information Act. James shrugged his shoulders.
'We'll see what they are hiding and then thinmk about what to do James. That's all we can do.'
James opened his office door and secure locked it, then made his way to the car. Nobody stopped him. That's good, he thought. He came to the first guard stop, the briefcase was in the passenger seat. The guard at the post checked him out and allowed him to pass.
"Have a good night, sir," The guard said.
"Thank you, Corporal," James returned then sped away. He hadn't noticed the black car behind him until the three mile mark. It's driver had been keeping his distance. Still, it made James' hair stand on end. He was being watched, and closely too. Two miles from home James thought they would back off. They didn't instead trying to run him off the road. After about five minutes, James decided to pull onto a dark a few hundred miles ahead. He had to hide the briefcase, the secret compartment in the trunk would be the best place. The turn came up and James took it, lights turned out. He pulled in and went don a mile or so at top speed. He felt lucky that there were no police on this rod tonight. Once he felt safe enough, James pulled over and hid the briefcase in the compartment in the trunk and underneathe the spare tire.
James knew that these people wouldn't be fulled for long. He closed the trunk and waited. It didn't take them long to find him, whoever they were. They took him and stuffed him int he black beamer. They looked everywhere in James' car for the case. Nothing. It was gone just like that. They didn't care. They blindfolded him and took him to wherever it was they hid. James knew that he may not see sunlight for a while. A few days later, the Hiko sheriff found James' car abandoned on that road ann had it towed back to his home. The report of her husband being missing devistated her. It took her six months to move on. She never remarried in the hope that he hadn't been killed. The boys bounced back just fine. They never knew what had really happened, other than the half -truth naomi had told them. It must have been good enough. Five years passed by, nothing. Now the two were eight and ten. Nothing would stop them from asking, what really happened, especially in the quiet places in their minds.
John and Garrett Sun Eagle approached the hulk of a military installation that was Area 51. The Air Force had claimed to move everything to Utah years before. Many in the area around Groom Lake and everywhere else thought this a ruse to keep them away from the area. Vehicles were always exiting and entering the gates. Something was going on there, just what no one knew. John and Garrett loved to go camping in the hills above the facility. The energy of the place seemed to attract them like a magnet. Most weekends the two boys there by sundown on fridays watching the facility and wondering what was going on below them. John had just turned twelve. Garrett was eight. It was the one thing the two did together. Everything else got in the way and they couldn't stop it. This friday was like any other there was a little homework, their mother had their dinners packed and ready. It was four thirty when the boys completed their homework, usually ahead of their teacher. It gave them more time to do what they really loved horseback riding. They loved the wind in their young faces as their horses ran.
"You boys finished up here," She called up to them.
They both smiled as they looked up at on another. It was just her and them. Their father had died in an automobile crash a few years before. Before that the couple had agreed to allow their sons to just be boys as much as possible. These over night camping trips were a part of that. the loving silence ended as an excited Garrett answered.
"Yeah mom, everything," he said.
"Not everything," she said looking around their room.
They knew what she meant. Their bedroom was a mess and had been for the last few days. A fine coat of dust had settled on their bookshelves and dust bunnies were peeking out from under the comforters that garnished their beds. They wondered where their cousins were right now and what they were doing. They hadn't gotten a letter from Matt in a month and wondered what was new. The computer on John's desk was still on. His America Online account shouted out an ominous "you've got mail." After a few seconds the attached animated web graphic of a dancing professor popped up. It was Matt's calling card and they all always got a kick out of it. Naomi would always send him back an email with another such thing with a little Frank Sinatra singing "I get a kick Outa You" and pointing at him. 'He may be a genius," she would say, but he has a wicked and twisted sense of humor. He gets it from my side of the family." This would of course be returned with a modified version singing "You Get Under My Skin."
"You had better not let those dust bunnies out," she said with a smile.
It had been rough rasing these two the past four years. That was when their Husband and father James had died in an ominous accident. To this day no one knew what the cause was. The evidence had been removed from the car, no stone left unturned. James had been an intelligence officer for the Navy. Naomi knew that it could be risky marrying any Military man with such classifications, but fell in love with him anyway. That's the way it always seems to work on both sides of the coin. She had always thought that it had something to do with Area 51, but was never sure. It was only in the past two years that she had allowed her boys to camp near the place. She didn't like its energy, but for her boys she could see that this place was their connection to him. It was their way to remember him. They had transfered to Nevada when Garrett was just getting ready to turn four years old. He didn't remember much about James, just what he had been told the year before.
The mail continued its plea to be opened as John finshed his rounds, dusting everything in sight. It wasn't too thankless a job after all. Besides, Matt's email would still be there beckoning him in a few minutes. He let it go on with its beckoning tyrade. Out of breath John sat down to read the email. It was happy news he was sending. Matt was coming across the country to Fort Huachuca for the National Science Fair Competition. Joh was excited as he looked up and smiled at his mother.
"What's up," Naomi asked him.
"It's from Matt. He's gotten to the national level of the Science Fair Technology Division at Fort Huachuca Middle School." John Reported.
This was good news. Naomi would get to see her brother and his funny little man again. She wondered if they would make a stop to see them. It had been a long time and they needed to catch up.
"Are they going to stop and see us," Garrett asked before his mother could utter the words,"Is he bringing Ptolemy?!"
It was Matt, They were coming to Nevada and Arizona for vacation. This was good news. It had been a lot of christmases since he had seen them. They would be stopping in the area for a few days. This could be it, they thought.
