New Short Speculative Fiction
On the night of Halloween in 1938, Orson Wells performed a radio broadcast of the War of the Worlds as a Halloween prank. The response was staggering - while some identified the broadcast for the joke it was, a great number of Americans panicked, and were taken in by the ruse.
Why was the fake broadcast so convincing? Because the piece of science fiction was not written as a starlog or set in a galaxy far far away, but took place right then, right there.

The purpose of this project is to form a collection of stories of speculative fiction that take place in the here and the now. Stories that are familiar to us in setting, but fascinating in possibility.
Some things to keep in mind:
- Multiple Submissions are encouraged, but not required. Write as many or as few of these stories as you like.
- Please post short-form submissions. I don't really like long-form submissions mixed in with short-form. Feel free to submit a short-form story from an existing piece or with existing characters, however - perhaps the short-form companion story or prequel for your epic scifi or fantasy project.
- Any speculative fiction is fine - be the tone and feel fantastic or scientific, steamy or cybery (speaking of -punk here, not anything else), just remember: the through line here is that all the stories occur in our world, in our time.
- Any short-form is fine, be it prose or verse. If you want to tell an "It Couldn't Happen Here" poem, go ahead.
- Enjoy yourself. The reason I made this project was to give all those heavy scifi/fantasy writers out there who are labouring on 37-chapter solo projects a chance to stretch and just get a short creative idea out. Less
