The WEbook Vote: Cycle 2

WEbook's second voting cycle ran from October 21 to November 18 2008. The WEbook community voted on more than 500 projects to determine the best in the top 10% and beyond from those submitted for publication. Following the vote, WEbook editors carefully considered the top-ranking projects and gave the best of the best the "green light." The following projects were selected, and are currently being edited by WEbook's professional editors.

The Colour Caster
Maya Cunningham is a 40-ish divorcee who lives in Cornwall, England, where she runs a country store. Her only child, Sean, 14, lives with her ex, with whom she’s fighting for custody. Sean is borderline autistic, a condition that appeared after a horrific car accident 12 years prior. The accident left Maya in a brief coma and ultimately claimed her marriage and her self-respect. The story begins when an ailing old man enters Maya’s store, wins her trust and draws her into a drama surrounding a mythic figure who turns out to be her son.

Ex-Pat Journal
The Ex-Pat Journal is a celebration of the joys and struggles of living abroad. From a harrowing bus ride in Tanzania to the power of “Hello” in a Chinese province, more than 30 essays capture the essence of what it’s like to be a stranger in a strange land. There’s the American mother who takes in an orphan in Cambodia, the woman who must navigate a Mexican hospital after her husband breaks his leg, the aid worker who befriends a fisherman in Newfoundland. And while each story is unique, they all speak to amazing discoveries and small triumphs that make life abroad worth living.
